In 2023, after three years on the move, Smashed RVA established a permanent home at 1600 Brook Road in Richmond’s Northside. The restaurant carries forward the same spirit that fueled the pop-up days—simple, crave-worthy burgers, rotating specials, and a strong connection to the community—now in a space where we can continue to grow. Our focus remains the same: keep things approachable, deliver consistent quality, and serve Richmond with the energy and hospitality that made Smashed RVA what it is today.
Meet Michael
Michael Marshall is the chef and owner behind Smashed RVA, a Richmond burger spot that grew from a scrappy pop-up into a neighborhood favorite. He got his start in restaurants young, working his way up from the dish pit to cooking in some of Richmond’s well-known kitchens. Along the way he picked up both fine-dining technique and a love for simple, straightforward food that people actually crave.
In 2020, he took that experience and launched Smashed RVA, rolling out crispy, aggressively seasoned smashburgers at breweries, shops, and events across the city. His approach was consistent and community-driven—showing up week after week, building a loyal following, and keeping things fun with creative specials. By 2023, all that hard work came together when he opened Smashed RVA’s first brick-and-mortar home in Northside. For Marshall, it’s still about the same thing: good food, good people, and staying true to the pop-up spirit that started it all—with one simple motto guiding it: make the best possible burger.
